mutter mutter mutter mutter
This newsletter includes Seth Meyers, particularly questionable cults, and a good sweater.
Hello! You’ve reached kelsey’s corner, the only newsletter on the internet written and lovingly curated by me, Kelsey. This newsletter was edited while the author had a fever so…I don’t know what’s going to happen here.
Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute
I'm getting in a little too deep here
I’m a much more sporadic Las Culturistas listener (and podcast listener, generally) than I used to be but history has proven over and over that I’ll do anything for Seth Meyers. This was a delight!
book corner | Two banger books: Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams, a contemporary romance with a whiff of the grumpy/sunshine trope but more interesting than that. I gobbled it up and didn’t want it to end! Second rec is slightly more esoteric, but Comedy Book by Jesse David Fox is informative and thoughtful and loving towards a subject that is rarely on the receiving end of those adjectives. I especially liked the chapter on political comedy and the dissection of Dave Chappelle’s career.
cult corner | Lotta cult content out in the world recently! I think Love Has Won on Max was deeply insane but also shockingly empathetic towards the cult members. I would have loved a little more pushback on their nuttiest beliefs (or a talking head expert who was like hey, that’s not a thing). I also watched the Netflix and Amazon Twin Flame documentaries and…I don’t know, man. I consume a lot of cult content and understand it could happen to anyone but these two seem like grade-A hacks. At least Mother God had a crazy vibe! At least NXIVM provided value in the beginning! I wouldn’t trust Jeff with a loaf of bread.
I liked The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes! Sue me! It’s a tough book to adapt into a movie and besides being a bit too long1 I thought it was a very genuine adaptation.
I did buy a lot of stuff on Black Friday but boy howdy I don’t have the brain to tell you about them. Expect a things-heavy newsletter next time.
A mishmash of content this week: Viola Davis loves a jacuzzi, Loons needs CPLoons, and Aaron Tviet made me cry!!! Again!!!
recommendation corner | Pick Me Up Cafe off Clark and Ainslie has Pepsi products and insane, perfectly-cooked breakfast potatoes. And a disco ball!
Bucky made me leave work after two hours because he wouldn’t stop howling. Like, at the moon. Like Jacob in the second through fourth Twilight films. Now I own one of those treat-dispensing cameras I may or may not return to try and soothe his nerves.
I’ll be back on December 15 with the final regular-season newsletter, followed by my 2023 Recap at the end of the month. [unintelligible screaming at the thought of my five-year hobby coming to an end] In the meantime, why don’t you check out the most-clicked link from our last newsletter — shockingly, the phone screen protector I impulse bought and love. And, if you want to follow me around the internet you can find a link to my other socials here.
If you liked this newsletter, please share it with a friend or an enemy using the button below. If you double-liked this newsletter and want to buy me a Slurpee for my troubles here’s my virtual tip jar. Until then, please be nice to people. I’ll be thinking of you.
