The Only Hot Who Up in Whoville
'Tis the season for our last newsletter of the year. It's probably a good thing, right?
Hello and welcome to kelsey’s corner, the only newsletter on the internet written and lovingly curated by me, Kelsey. Thank you for working through last newsletter’s absence with me! This week is all about dentists, Etsy shops run by nuns, and a goddamn blaze in the dark.
Things For Your Ears
I’ll be honest: I don’t love Taylor Swift’s newest album. I am proving to be much more of a Folklore gal, if we’re being honest with each other. This is my favorite song from Evermore (Willow or Champagne Problems are close seconds) mostly because I play it and pretend I’m hosting a private campfire concert for my dog.
Things For Your Eyes
I’m very fascinated by the concept of “celebrity pastors” and I’m very, very fascinated by the downfall of Hillsong’s (a hip, young church) hip, young pastor. Infidelity abounds, but the stories of the folks working at the church in the name of “service” doesn’t really sit right with me.
My friend Leah shared this five-year-old article with me and, in honor of the new Spider-Man news, I thought I’d share it with you.
While nothing pleases me more than the mental gymnastics involved when a mostly-white high school chooses to put up a production of “In the Heights,” it does much more harm than good. This article on whitewashing in high school theater clearly outlines the reasons and shows us how we can do better.
Things For Your Ears and Eyes
I’ve watched four seasons of Cutthroat Kitchen since Monday. This is less of a recommendation and more of a cry for help.
This is also incredibly niche, but there was a very thoughtful episode of This Is Life with Lisa Ling last week about the impact of shootings on the families left behind and the people who survive. I think you could find it on demand if you wanted to. It was very beautifully done.
Things
Shockingly, I haven’t been carrying a bag much lately but sometimes I just need a little more space than my pockets can provide, so I splurged on this Girlfriend Collective fanny pack for my longer dog walks and quick trips to CVS. The best part is the big pocket is big enough to hold my “emergency pouch” so I can consolidate and go without much effort.
I love Pepsi. This is not really a secret, more like something you’d learn within an hour of meeting me. I also, in a way I’m not always proud of, love to commit to a bit. This kind of explains how I found myself on Etsy looking for Pepsi-themed ornaments for my first Christmas tree. Most of them weren’t too impressive but then I stumbled upon this listing; a glowing reindeer nose on a dark Christmas Eve. These ornaments of little angels holding different items are made by nuns (the Sisters of the Holy Names!) in California. My tree is now adorned with a little ornament of an angel that looks exactly like me holding a can of Pepsi, and I will treasure it for the rest of my life. Look upon my nun ornament and weep!
Things to Make You Smile
For this week’s Tik Toks I have a few questions: Did Rosa Parks ever watch Shrek? What white people song makes you lose your mind? Did you know he was a dentist?
And finally, let us celebrate the reason for the season: Matt Rogers NSFW and unbelievably catchy “I Want” song for Martha May Whovier. Got this jacuzzi runniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin’!
Due to the goofiest gift of scheduling I will back to ring in the new year with you on January 1. Expect a recap of my 25 favorite things from the 2020 newsletters and either a scathing indictment of how resolutions are supposed to make us feel bad or a list of my personal resolutions. I’m not sure what side I’ll end up on.
I hope you and your loved ones have a healthy and safe holiday. Congrats on almost making it through 2020. This year, that’s something to genuinely be proud of.
Your friend,
Kelsey
